I Love You… I know you can do it…
I have recently had the
honour of standing beside someone I love very dearly as they begin to
make a transition into
opening new doors in their life. The journey to this point
has had many ups and downs as every transition can have…
I’ve learned that my responsibility in being of
“service” to those I love is to hold them able to make self-supportive
decisions, to trust they have the tools to begin the journey and to encourage
their choices in empowering and positive ways.
Holding others able to do their life is one of the
greatest gifts we can offer to those we love. It is often
easy for caregivers
to “think” they know the best solution and sometimes they can stand in the way
of the other person’s growth.
As a caregiver, it is very easy to get caught up
in the other person’s story and empower them to stay stuck – it is done
unknowingly in one’s desire to help. Sometimes the best help
is “tough love” – standing a few feet away from the child
learning to walk is empowering the child to take the baby steps needed to reach
it’s goal. Making the child reach
out for
your hand may seem harsh and yet – tough love gives them permission to believe
in themselves and they begin to take
those first steps…
Learning to be of service to those we care for is
a great gift. The difference between helping and being of
service is
important to understand. Helping without being requested by
the other person – disempowers them and drains the
helpers
energy. Being of service to the other person – provides the
space for them to ask for what they want and for you to support
them in a loving and accepting way.
